Educational Materials on Jewish Life in Hesse

Educational Materials on Jewish Life in Hesse

On behalf of the Hessian State Centre for Civic Education, I created accompanying teaching materials for historical-political education in schools for the podcast series “Jewish Life, History and Culture in Hesse” and was involved in the conception of episodes 10 to 12.

Jewish life has a long and varied tradition in Hesse. This is precisely where the educational material comes in. It offers teachers a low-threshold, multimedia introduction to topics relating to Jewish history, culture and the present in the region from the past to the present day.

The starting point for each material unit is a podcast episode. The radio play-style introduction and the subsequent expert discussions with guests can be used as an interactive impulse in the classroom.

The material is suitable for use in religion, ethics and history lessons from year 9 to upper secondary school, as well as for extracurricular learning groups and university teaching.

"The Family Was Jewish …" – Teaching Material

On behalf of the Fritz Bauer Institute in Frankfurt am Main, I developed a brochure for teaching at upper secondary level. The material booklet “The family was Jewish … Biographical learning using the example of a German-Jewish family” was published in September 2024.

It is based on the short film of the same name by Judy Rosenthal (2021), which was produced as part of the exhibition “Frankfurt in the Nazi era – a city joins in” at the Historical Museum Frankfurt am Main. In it, Rosenthal follows the lives of family members in Munich during the Weimar Republic and the Nazi era.

The booklet presents six biographies of family members, including that of Judy Rosenthal’s great-grandmother Dorline Springer. Topics: Jewish life before 1933, Gleichschaltung 1933–34, Nuremberg Laws, November Pogroms 1938.

Teaching Materials on Anne Frank's Family History

Teaching Materials on Anne Frank's Family History

The material booklet “Freedom Rights. The Example of Anne Frank’s Ancestors and Family” presents teaching material on the history of civil liberties using the example of Anne Frank’s ancestors and family. “Freedom rights” here means the civil rights and legal concepts of the 19th century up to the Universal Declaration of Human Rights of 1948 and their reception in the present day.

Four rights are discussed in brief introductions based on the context of young people’s lives: the right to freedom of travel, freedom to choose where to live, freedom to choose an occupation and human rights.

Together with Ricarda Wawra, I was responsible for the conception, historical research and text creation. The project was realised in 2013. The project partner was Sandra Krawinkel (graphic design). The material booklet is suitable for history lessons in years 8–10 and as accompanying material to deepen the reading of Anne Frank’s diary in German lessons.
